Why is Shivratri celebrated ?

Shivaratri has more than one story, and here are a few:

  • One says that on this day, Lord Shiva got married to Parvati. So, people celebrate this special union.
  • Another story tells that when Devas and demons churned the ocean for ambrosia, poison came out. Lord Shiva drank it to protect both Devas and humans, turning blue. Shivratri honors this act. This is the most believed and widely Accepted reason of MahaShivratri according to Hindu Traditions.
  • There’s also a legend where Lord Shiva saved Earth by catching Goddess Ganga in his hair as she descended from heaven. To honor this, people bathe the Shivalinga on Shivratri.
  • It’s believed that the formless God Sadashiv appeared as Lingodhbhav Moorthi at midnight. That’s why people stay up all night praying to God.

Mahashivratri is a special day to show respect and celebrate Lord Shiva, and just appreciate life itself. Many folks spend the day doing certain things:

  1. Fasting: Not eating for a while.
  2. Meditating: Taking some quiet time to think deeply.
  3. Chanting Om Namah Shivaya: Repeating this special mantra.
  4. Attending Rudra Puja or Mahashivratri Puja: Being part of special prayers or ceremonies.
  5. Worshipping the Shivalinga: Showing love and respect to the symbolic representation of Lord Shiva.

These activities help make Mahashivratri meaningful and special.

What can you eat and drink during MahaShivratri 2024 Fast?

Food: If you’re fasting, don’t eat foods made from grains like rice and wheat. Instead, go for fruits, nuts, and things made with milk. Don’t have food with Salt in it.

Drinks: Don’t drink alcohol and non-vegetarian food. You may drink smoothies or juice depending on what kind of Fast you are observing.

Water: Some people who are fasting decide not to eat or drink anything, while others just avoid certain foods. However it is important to stay hydrated. So, if you decided to drink water, then drink atleast 7-8 glasses of water during the day of Shivratri Fast.

When should I break my fast?
The fast can be broken the next day after sunrise, or after performing the Maha Shivratri puja in the evening.

How to meditate during MahaShivratri 2024?

Mentally chanting the Mantra “Om Namah Shivaya” is the best way to meditate on Shivratri. However if you already practice a certain type of meditation, you may choose to meditate in that way.

  1. ‘Om’ in the mantra:
    • Meaning: “Om” is a sacred sound and symbol in various Indian religions. It is often considered to represent the sound of the universe, encompassing all other sounds. It is a symbol of universal consciousness and the essence of ultimate reality.
    • Why it works: Chanting “Om” in meditation is believed to bring a sense of peace and love. The rhythmic repetition of this universal sound can help focus the mind, promote relaxation, and connect the individual with a broader, cosmic consciousness.
  2. The five letters in ‘Namah Shivaya’ (Na, Ma, Shi, Va, Ya):
    • Meaning: These letters represent the five elements – Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether. In Hindu philosophy, these elements are fundamental building blocks of the universe, and they are associated with different aspects of creation and existence.
    • Why it works: Chanting these letters in the mantra “Namah Shivaya” is thought to invoke the presence and blessings of Lord Shiva, who is considered a deity associated with transformation and destruction. The inclusion of the five elements signifies a harmonious connection with the forces of nature and the cosmos, promoting balance and spiritual alignment.

In summary, the meditation works by incorporating sacred sounds (‘Om’) that symbolize the universal essence and by using the five elemental letters in ‘Namah Shivaya’ to connect with the fundamental building blocks of the universe. This practice is believed to bring about inner peace, love, and a sense of alignment with the cosmic order.

Have a Great Night on this special occasion of MahaShivratri 2024 on 8th March, and a great day on the following day.
