What is Women’s Day?

International Women’s Day has its roots in the early labor movement in North America and Europe. The first National Women’s Day was observed in the United States on February 28, 1909, organized by the Socialist Party of America to honor a garment workers’ strike in New York where women protested against poor working conditions and low wages.

The idea quickly gained traction, and the following year, the International Socialist Women’s Conference suggested a Women’s Day be celebrated annually, although no specific date was chosen at that time.

In 1910, during the International Conference of Working Women held in Copenhagen, Denmark, Clara Zetkin, a German activist, proposed the idea of an International Women’s Day. Her suggestion was met with unanimous approval, and the first International Women’s Day was celebrated the following year on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, where more than one million people attended rallies advocating for women’s rights to work, vote, and hold public office.

Over the years, International Women’s Day has evolved into a global movement, highlighting various aspects of gender equality and women’s rights, including access to education, healthcare, employment opportunities, and political representation.

The day serves as a platform to raise awareness about ongoing challenges faced by women worldwide, such as gender-based violence, discrimination, and unequal pay, while also celebrating the achievements and contributions of women in all fields of life.

Each year, International Women’s Day is marked by a specific theme set by the United Nations or other organizations to focus attention on key issues affecting women globally.
